Better Mornings, The Latest

June Shower Sessions

A well-groomed monthly playlist to start your morning right. June’s Theme: A Summertime Thing…

We’re big advocates of long, hot showers. A good steam will soothe your muscles, clear your head and soften your stubble before that all-important shave. A great soundtrack will make the whole process a faster and more enjoyable experience.

Summer is here. Let the record state that we at Shower Sessions worked tirelessly to convince the powers that be at your place of employment to adopt the same schedule as your grade school and give you a much-deserved three-month summer break. Sadly our petition was denied and work will continue as regularly scheduled. That being said, SUMMER IS STILL HERE. The simple fact that things like coats, scarves and gloves won’t enter anywhere near your morning equation is celebration enough. Dress light. Think light. Live light.

June Shower Sessions: A Summertime Thing

Your playlist theme for June: A Summertime Thing. It’s a musical reminder to embrace the season of easy living. To get you in the mood: a dose of the “Boogaloo Blues,” by the great Johnny Colon. Let the rhythm wake you. It’s the sound of a hot summer. Perhaps dial the temperature of your shower back a few degrees. That and a “Summer Breeze,” courtesy of Jamaica’s master organ player Jackie Mittoo will help keep you cool all day. The heroine of Taj Mahal’s “Good Morning Miss Brown,” says “I’m feelin’ fine and lookin’ good man, what about you?”

You? You are also “Lookin’ Good,” which Magic Sam will testify to. He’ll use his guitar to do most of the testifying, but we don’t think you’ll mind. Perhaps there’s a window in your bathroom and the sun is shining in. Be like that sun and shine, because like the “Penthouse Pauper,” you’re a diamond ring. It might not be a “summer song,” but we’ve found Creedence works in every season.

Think about the things you want to do before the end of August. Things you can only do in these warm months. Rhett Miller can help give you ideas with his highly evocative “Most in the Summertime,” If you still need ideas, well….

We’d argue that summer is the time to break a few rules along with breaking your routine. Now don’t use that as an excuse to start cooking meth or embezzling your client’s money. We mean more of the “it’s okay to stay up past your bedtime” or take a Ferris Bueller day off. Experience the fun of “When it Was Wrong,” because as the criminally underrated Arthur Lee reminds you “Everybody’s Got Live.”

Which brings us to the namesake of our theme: it’s a “Summertime Thing,” and with it, “Here Comes the Girls.” It’s time to seize the season, otherwise “time’s gonna pass you by” and “you won’t have time to cry.” as Ann Peebles Sings on “Run, Run, Run.” So “Take It Easy” and don’t be afraid to “Play With Fire.” Make some plans to “See the Bright Lights Tonight.”

In other words, follow the words of “Ancient Jules”: “Take your time, ease up, look around and waste a day.”

Trust us. “Don’t think twice it’s alright.”
