A well-groomed monthly playlist to start your morning right. January’s theme: Rise and Shine.
We’re big advocates of long, hot showers. A good steam will soothe your muscles, clear your head and soften your stubble before that all-important shave. A great soundtrack will make the whole process a faster and more enjoyable experience.
It’s a new year, a new dawn, a new day, a new LIIIIIIIIIIIIFE for you…so, yeah: it’s time to get up. It can be hard to get behind the phrase “rise and shine,” because it’s usually spoken with the subtlety of a bugle blowing reveille right about the time you’re in the warmest, darkest depths of sleep.
But consider the words: “rise” and “shine.” It’s a real two-parter. The first part (“rise”) can take so much energy that it’s easy to forget the second, more important part (“shine.”) The two must always work in concert and there’s no better place to start than in your morning shower. Wake up and prepare to be polished. January’s Shower Sessions theme is “Rise and Shine.”
January Shower Sessions: Rise and Shine
Getting your motor running in the morning is easier when you have a little Soul Sauce, which is cobweb-clearing stuff if ever there was. Turn the water on and “Rise to the Sun” with the Alabama Shakes. Odds are you’re a “Working Man” and if there’s one man who can get you excited about the work ahead it’s the great Chicago-by-way-of-Mississippi bluesman Otis Rush. Don’t let his name give you any ideas. Now is not the time to rush.
Now is the time to enjoy the sounds of The Record Company, who released one of 2016’s best records, though it sounds like it was recorded in a much less complicated time. A gentle reminder from Brass Construction follows: “Get Up to Get Down.” Think of it as permission to groove a bit while you’re soaping up.
Another thought as British chanteuse Holly Golightly enters your orbit: a little blast of freezing water is the surest way to get your adrenaline going, so let your shower “Run Cold” for as long as you can take it. Make that adrenaline shot a double with a throwback scorcher from Kings of Leon’s debut. Don’t be afraid to get “99 Shades of Crazy” or “Shake the Dope Out.” To make it in this world you’ll want to be both clear-eyed and cock-eyed. That’s “The Deal.”
And finally a three-song reminder to shine. Be your most multi-faceted and brilliant self. Be a light unto the world. Battle back against the darkness.
Don’t let your year get mired in trivial things. Focus on essential elements. Like Earth, Wind and Fire.
